Look up an appliance by any model or serial number it shows before you commit to buying it. Browse the CPSC's recall page by product category, or search SaferProducts.gov's public database, and later check the manufacturer's own site for the manual.

A certified refrigerator is about 9 percent more efficient than the federal minimum standard. A full appliance check still comes down to checking doors, seals, racks and knobs by hand.

A missing or unreadable model number means the recall and manual look-ups cannot be tied to that exact unit. When that happens, a hands-on check decides instead: doors, seals, shelves, knobs and the cord, checked directly on the appliance in front of you rather than looked up online.
A standard-capacity dishwasher holds more than eight place settings and six serving pieces, while a compact-capacity model holds fewer than that, per Energy Star's own definition. Weigh the place-setting count against what your household needs, then measure the unit's width against the cabinet opening as a separate check before choosing between the two sizes.
Find an appliance's manual on the manufacturer's own website by searching the exact model number. If the appliance shows that number at pickup, write it down or take a photo of it before you leave. Keep it handy when you search, and read the manual before you move or connect the unit.
A refrigerator with the freezer on top tends to use the least energy, ahead of a bottom-freezer or a side-by-side layout, per Energy Star's own comparison. On a liquidation unit, weigh that layout against a bottom-freezer or side-by-side model before you settle on one.
